Choosing a host&server

April 20th, 2008

Proxies are very resource intensive on servers so it is best that you get a dedicated server. Some hosting companies allow you to use their service to host a proxy but once it gets to intensive you have two options:

  • Shut it down
  • Upgrade to Dedicated

One of the things you can do to insure that you suffer minimal downtime is to get a dedicated server right from the beginning. It will save you the hassle of having to upgrade as your proxy gets more and more visitors. Of course, you may be thinking “What about just getting a VPS or shared account that allows proxies?” This is something that I strongly recommend that you don’t do as once your proxy starts getting popular you could get shut down and that could result in a loss of your money, and traffic as downtime is to proxies as green kryptonite is to Clark Kent.

If you are starting from scratch then you could always choose a host that allows proxies. Make sure you read over the hosting companies Terms of Service to be sure that proxies are allowed. If they offer a monthly or quarterly payment option choose one of them as it is most likely that you will have to upgrade or even switch hosts. Look out for an upcoming posts in which I will provide a list of hosts that allow proxies on their non-dedicated packages.

Thats it for today, be sure to look out for future posts about hosting companies, proxy scripts, and helpful scripts for running a proxy.
